Lee Zinck joined the Navy at age 17 and was assigned to the engine room on the destroyer USS Buck, which was on the North Atlantic Patrol. The ship was hit by a German submarine, and Zinck left the destroyer and stayed in the water 20 hours before being picked up. He was injured by depth charges from the sinking ship and received the Purple Heart. He was then assigned to the USS Ingraham, which was sent to support ground troops invading Pacific Islands. At Okinawa his destroyer was hit by a kamikaze and damaged, but was eventually repaired and used again.
