Description
Ed Baumgarten turned 18 when he was a junior in high school and got drafted out of high school. He volunteered to be in the Paratroops. During World War II, he served in various Pacific islands -- mostly as a scout. A Japanese soldier threw a hand grenade, which landed between his feet and injured him, for which he received the Purple Heart. After the war ended, he served in Japan for six months before returning to the United States.
