Description
Discussion of changes in agricultural techniques since Gordon began teaching agriculture in 1931. Includes his background in the field and family history. His father was a veterinarian and farmer. Sam grew up on a farm in Smithfield, milked cows and did other farm chores, was member of 4H and Ag clubs. In 1930 consumers liked fat in beef and pork. Pigs and cattle were crossbred to get wide, thick bodies with high fat levels. As demand changed, cattle and pig farmers gradually changed to varieties of animals with more muslce and less fat. Dairy farmers were paid more for products with higher percentages of butterfat, but butterfat is no longer an issue. Poultry production increased with consumers' reluctance to eat red meat. Changes began during WWII. Interview includes sugar beet production, area ground crops, dry farming and horticulture. Sam taught agriculture at Box Elder High School.
