Description
Donald Pond was serving in the U.S. Army at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 when the Japanese military attacked the base. He saw planes flying low overhead and thought they were US aircraft practicing maneuvers until he saw American soldiers falling to the ground. His unit was sent for ammunition and ordered to fire at any returning enemy aircraft. While serving at Guadalcanal, he sustained back injuries, was treated at hospitals in Guadalcanal and Hebrides before being returned to the States.
