Description
This is a wooden peg (prosthetic) leg and was worn by Jonah Mathias. He was the Mayor of Brigham City when Utah became a state in 1896. The peg leg is hollowed out and formed of wood. The upper part is covered on the outside with a paper-like fabric. It has a solid carved wood base which is attached to the hollowed-out upper part by a leather strap and screws. There is a piece of metal on the very bottom of the wooden base. The diameter of the metal tip is.875 with a height of 1.250 inches. Canvas and leather straps are attached to each side of the upper part of the artificial leg and reach up over the shoulders of the wearer. The length of each shoulder strap is 59.375 inches and the width is 2.000 inches. There is a canvas cross piece between the two straps in the back and the straps cross in the front.
